Windows Would Like to Install Updates for Your Computer: Should You Accept or Decline?

windows updates important blog Polarverse IT

If you have a PC, you know just how pesky those updates can be. A message will pop up on your screen prompting you to reboot your machine so that Windows can install its updates. It sounds so innocent and ever so helpful, but a lot of us have felt anguish and anger when the updates take a couple of hours to install. Because of this, some PC users have stopped installing Windows updates – but is that wise?

Are Windows Updates Really Necessary?

It depends on what you mean. Not installing an update won’t prevent your PC from functioning. Windows will keep operating at the level it has been. But that could be a problem. Windows updates are usually security patches that have been designed to keep your Microsoft software safe. They’re meant to help keep out unauthorized users and protect your computer from potentially harmful intrusions. Typically, Windows will release security patches once a month and, unless you’ve changed a setting manually, your computer will install those automatically. Don’t worry – that’s a good thing.

What Other Kinds of Updates Are There?

Windows will also release updates meant to fix flaw or bugs in its software. These updates are less frequent and installing them will require you to reboot your computer. Sometimes, the updates will also include a new feature that is designed to improve your Windows experience. So overall, the updates are worthwhile – even if you do have to give up a bit of screen time to get them.

Starting with Windows 10, updating is required by Windows. If you’re using a version older than Windows 10, it’s not mandatory for you to install updates, but hopefully we’ve convinced you of the benefits of doing so.

We recommend setting your computer to “Install Updates Automatically”. But if you want to decide when the updates will be installed (e.g. at night), you can change the settings in your Windows Settings (Windows 10) so that you can manually check for updates. (If you’re a Polarverse client, settings for your Windows update are locked because we manage it for you.) You’ll need to do the following:

  1. Click on the Start Icon and open up Settings.
  2. Select Update & Security
  3. Select the advanced options link under Update Settings.
  4. Check the option that you prefer.
  5. We recommend you select the “Give me updates for other Microsoft products when I update Windows” and NOT the Defer upgrades” option.

What Do I Do If the Installation Process Is Taking Too Long?

Do not try to turn off or reboot your computer. It doesn’t happen all that often but sometimes, Windows might freeze during the installation process. If you try to reboot it while it’s stuck mid-installation, you might make the problem worse. The best solution is to just wait it out or call for help. But if you’re tech savvy, you can attempt to find the problem.

What If My Computer Keeps Crashing?

You might need to call an expert to find out what the problem is. Until you’ve figured it out and fixed the problem with your machine, you’ll probably want to back up your data in case it gets corrupted or lost. You can do this on an external hard drive or, if you’re a client of ours, we can do a backup with an online storage device.

Last Piece of Advice

Yes, it is annoying to have to deal with a monthly update for your computer. We know what you’re thinking – Windows should have perfected their software! But hey, let’s cut them a little slack. Windows is still pretty useful. And the updates are meant to protect you and your machine. (Luckily, Windows 10 promises to provide less frequent and more effective updates. So we’re getting closer to the perfect version of Windows!)
